October 11: International Day of the Girl

This Friday, October 11, marks International Day of the Girl Child, an occasion that the United Nations put into effect two years ago. The day celebrates girls while advocating for gender equality and raising awareness about the unique challenges girls face around the world. According to the United Nations, the day's mission is "to help galvanize worldwide enthusiasm for goals to better girls' lives, providing an opportunity for them to show leadership and reach their full potential."

This year, the day's theme is "Innovating for Girls' Education." It will focus on the importance of new technology and innovation in partnerships, policies, resource utilization, and engagement of young people.
Many of the producer organizations Lydali works with have values that align with the Day of the Girl and create opportunities for women around the world.

Raven + Lily trains and employs marginalized women in Ethiopia and India while providing them with fair pay and services such as savings accounts and education.
Quazi Design works in Mbabane, Swaziland, and hires women on a permanent basis in order to help them grow with the business and teach them to master various skills and techniques.
Rags2Riches provides fair access to the market and the formal economy to women in Payatas in the Philippines and trains them in health and finance to help them move forward.
Peace Cord empowers Afghani women through employment in an area that is slowly being rebuilt.
Basha is based in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and helps give women living in poverty a better life by training them to turn their talents into products that can be sold to provide a reliable income.
